Kyle is one of the most gifted forwards I have had the privilege of coaching. His outstanding play is a combination of several things. He has a great instincts, a knack of getting to the where the puck will be, and the quickness and speed to take advantage of those instincts. When he has the puck he displays a set of outstanding hands and a constant attack mode. Kyle is imaginative with the puck – a product of a lot of hours of experimenting in the driveway, and with his sometimes unbelievable first step seems to teleport past defenders. He is one of premier forwards in the state.
His scoring stats are great but they do not show his improvement in his overall game. As with most scorers, Kyle was a little deficient in the “other” end of the rink. He has worked hard at learning how to work in the defensive zone, is an outstanding faceoff man, is willing to block shots, and a tenacious penalty killer.
A transfer to West in his sophomore year, Kyle has integrated well into the Wausau West school community. He is a Link Leader, a member of the Link Crew which helps students new to West (freshmen and transfer) become oriented to the school, its schedule, and the student’s surroundings. He has competed in regional and state competitions with the DECA Club (the school’s marketing program). He carries a 3.42 GPA and his future plans include playing junior hockey, then attending college with the purpose of obtaining a degree in Law.
As a hockey team member he has helped West to 2 consecutive State Tournament Championship games while battling through various injuries each year. He was elected a captain by his teammates and took his role seriously in helping to prepare the team in off-season workouts. This year, with a young team around him going through some struggles with growing pains and a difficult schedule, his numbers, while good, belie his true value to the team as he is making the players around him better each game.
Kyle also has been a valuable member of Team Wisconsin the past 3 seasons and led the team in scoring this past fall in the Minnesota Elite League.
Kyle Lee is an outstanding Player of the Year Candidate.
